When Is the Best Time of Year to Seal an Asphalt Road? Temperature Guide
2026.10.30
Sealing an asphalt road at the wrong time of year can ruin an otherwise good job. Too cold, wet or humid and the emulsion will not break and bond properly. Here is when to schedule sealing treatments.
The ideal sealing weather
- Temperature: above 10-15 C during application and for several hours after.
- Trend: rising or warm temperatures, not a cold night coming up.
- Surface: the pavement must be dry - morning dew or recent rain cancels the day.
- No rain forecast for the cure period (usually 24 hours).
Best season by treatment
| Treatment | Best season | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Fog / sand fog seal | Late spring - early autumn | Dew, rain, cold nights |
| Slurry seal | Warm, dry months | High humidity, falling temp |
| Micro-surfacing | Warm season, daytime cure | Cool, damp mornings |
| Crack sealing (hot-pour) | Spring or autumn | Frozen or wet cracks |
| Cold patch pothole repair | Year-round, even winter | Standing water in hole |
Why mornings are risky
Many failures come from paving when the surface still holds dew. The moisture under the emulsion prevents bonding and causes the layer to slide or ravel. Wait until the sun has dried the pavement before the paver starts.
Plan your season
In temperate climates, the reliable sealing window is roughly late May to early September. Hot-pour crack sealing can start earlier in spring and run later into autumn. Cold patch is the only tool that works through winter for emergency pothole control.
