Crack Sealing Machine Buying Checklist: 10 Specs Contractors Must Verify
2026.11.03
Why the Sealing Machine Makes or Breaks the Job
Crack sealing is 30 percent material and 70 percent machine and technique. Even premium hot-pour sealant will fail if the machine overheats it above 190°C, cannot maintain application temperature in cold weather, or clogs every few meters. When you buy a crack sealing machine from an overseas supplier, the catalog tells you the headline numbers; this checklist tells you what to actually verify.
The 10-Point Buying Checklist
- Tank capacity: 100 L for walk-behind, 200-500 L for towed/truck-mounted. Bigger tank = fewer refills, but weigh load on your towing vehicle.
- Temperature range and accuracy: Must hold 180-200°C within ±5°C; digital display and independent thermostat, not just a burner dial.
- Heating type: Direct-fired lpg is cheaper but risks local overheating; indirect thermal-oil heating is preferred for consistent sealant quality.
- Agitation / stirring: Mechanical paddle keeps sealant homogeneous; static tanks cause bottom-carbonizing and clogs.
- Hose length and heated hose: Heated rubber hose 5-15 m keeps sealant liquid at the wand end; an unheated hose is the #1 cause of plugging.
- Wand and applicator: Bottom-pour wand with shut-off valve; consider a pressurized pour pot for routing cracks.
- Travel mode: Hand-push, self-propelled, towed or truck-mounted. Match to your road width and annual footage.
- Burner and power: LPG burner, separate 12V/220V electric for pump and stirrer; confirm the voltage/frequency for your country.
- Safety: Pressure relief valve, over-temperature alarm, flame-out protection, manual emergency stop.
- After-sales: Spare parts (hose, pump, wand tip, thermocouple) in stock; 1-year warranty; video support in English.
Sizing by Annual Job Volume
| Annual crack footage | Recommended machine |
|---|---|
| < 10,000 m | 100 L hand-push, basic |
| 10,000 - 50,000 m | 200 L self-propelled, heated hose |
| > 50,000 m | 500 L truck-mounted, thermal-oil heated |
Before You Order
Ask the supplier for a 10-minute video of the machine running: sealant reaching temperature, wand pouring continuously for 60 seconds, and hose not plugging. The cheapest machine that cannot run a full day will cost you more per kilometer than a well-equipped one.
